What happens when the doctors are far, far sicker than the patients? What happens when you go under their knives, their anesthetics, when you put your life in the hands of the deranged? You’ve just entered the world of “Mondo Medicale”… and if after this experience you’re just hospitalized, you’re getting off easy! The latest musical malpractice from IMPALED shows the surgeons taking their incisive sound from butchery to surgery. This sophisticated slaughter is ample evidence that the doctors in IMPALED are out- of their minds! IMPALED is definitely destroying expectations with “Mondo Medicale”- the music is as savagely shocking as the musical equivalent of a routine checkup that turns into a ghastly medical ordeal of un-anaesthetized surgery and acrimonious amputation! This highly developed forensic nightmare is infused with an IV bag full of killer hooks and injected with a considerable dose of morbid melodies. Utterly more cutting and far more accomplished than their compatriots, IMPALED have handed down a dire diagnosis for the standards of the splatter genre, leaving any preconceptions about the band far, far behind... Welcoming a wealth of developments into the band’s gore-fixated approach, “Mondo Medicale” sees IMPALED coming fully into their own as a force to be reckoned with. While “The Dead Shall Dead Remain” was a powerful underground statement of intent, “Mondo Medicale” cuts much, much deeper due to the crystal clarity of the material and the production values. Principal songwriter and general malpractitioner, guitarist/vocalist Sean McGrath, together with new guitarist/vocalist and immoral surgeon Andrew LaBarre, has added a new level of musicality to the band, with LaBarre’s lead-work introducing a downright shredding (in all senses of the word) edge to the proceedings, interlacing the band’s inherent brutality with a sophistication rarely found in the Death Metal genre. Labarre’s raspy low vocals are also a more than adequate replacement for the growls of departed guitarist/vocalist Leon DelMuerte. Also present on “Mondo Medicale” are the ultra-guttural vocals of Ross Sewage, who had previously been relegated to only doing backing vocals. Sewage’s distinctive death-rattle adds a new depth to the now three-pronged vocal assault, and a new level of sheer brutality to the overall vocal approach. The percussive assault has also stepped up a notch in power and execution, with intoxicologist Raul Varela hammering his kit with the precision of EKG monitor. The quasi-conceptual thread running through the lyrics imbues the entire album with another layer of depth for the serious listener to dissect. Pairing off the undeniable brutality of tracks like “Dead Inside” with the more controlled mid-paced intricacy of tracks like “Carpe Mortem”, the band deftly incise a path through the Death Metal extremes of melody and brutality, straddling the two realms with clinical precision. The almost classically-influenced progressions and melodies showcased on songs like “The Worms Crawl In” weave seamlessly through the raw power of the more straightforward Death Metal riffing featured on tracks like “Choke on It” and the soon-to-be mosh pit favorite, “Operating Theatre”. The resulting cacophony is definitely the band’s finest moment to date and surpasses the standards of the “Gore” genre at every turn and in every capacity. “Mondo Medicale” sees IMPALED performing that most sophisticated of musical surgeries, excising and resecting their sound into new directions while retaining the core essence of what the band is all about. We are pleased to report that the operation is a complete success.
